Stem Cell Facelift
Many a mature woman is wondering how to rejuvenate her face. The available options which range from plastic surgery to cosmetic laser and dermal injectables are quite confusing: how is the prospective patient to know what option to choose?
Before we go any further let’s ask the fundamental question: what is the main difference between a young face and an aging face? The seemingly obvious answer is wrinkles and sagging skin. Skin sags and wrinkles for several reasons; one of them being the age-related decrease in the production of collagen and elastin; the main reason the face ages however is the loss of facial muscles’ volume.
Young people’s faces are plump and their skin is stretched tightly over the facial muscles. With age the volume of facial muscles decreases and the skin begins to wrinkle and sag. Restoring the size of facial muscles significantly reduces aging skin’s sagging and wrinkling.
Until recently the only way to increase the volume of facial muscles were synthetic implants and injectables. Both can be effective and each has its own risks. Implants require surgery; injectables are not always well tolerated by the patient and have some propensity to shift. Neither of the options is entirely safe and the main reason for it is that both introduce a foreign substance to the patient’s body.
Traditional facelift is a major surgery that’s traumatic to the patient because it is most often performed under a general anesthesia. The recovery is long and painful. The cost of a facelift surgery can be painful as well.
Stem Cell Facelift is the first non-surgical and natural facelift alternative. It has several advantages over the currently popular procedures: it produces excellent results; it is minimally invasive and involves no incisions, no scalpel and no general anesthesia. Unlike surgical facelift, it doesn’t expose the patient to the risk of facial nerve damage. It is performed at the doctor’s office. The post-procedure downtime is minimal or – in some cases – none at all. The cost is significantly lower than that of a traditional facelift.
What is Stem Cell Facelift? (No need to worry, there are no embryos harmed in the process!) The Stem Cell Facelift uses adult stem cells derived from the patient’s own tissue to increase the volume of facial muscles. It is referred to as a Fat Autograft Muscle Injection (FAMI in short) or as autoimplantation. (Note that both terms contain the Latin word “auto” which means “self”)
How is it done? The first part of Stem Cell Facelift is fat harvesting: using a microcannula (a thin, tube-like medical instrument) the doctor liposuctions an area of the patient’s body that has a rich fat deposit. The stem cells are then harvested from the patient’s own fat and connective issue. Once the stem cell-rich substance is prepared it gets injected back into the fat which is ready to be used for grafting. In the second part of the procedure, the doctor injects the stem cell material into pre-selected facial muscles to restore youthful fullness. (Patients often combine liposculpture with stem cell facelift. This way they achieve two goals: better body contour and a younger face.)
The harvesting and grafting may be performed in one or two separate procedures, the decision will be made based on your specific situation by your doctor. (Performing each procedure separately reduces the impact on the body and speeds up the recovery process.)
Stem cell facelift isn’t a superficial solution. It doesn’t address the skin alone. It addresses the real problem of the aging face: it restores the fullness of facial muscles. (The same procedure can be used to restore youth to aging hands!)
