Low carb diet with high protein? Weightlifting and cardio workouts. I want to town down! Cutting phase.?
Hello everyone. I have a question on doing a diet which lowers carb intake and increase protein/good fat. More like a 30% carb/50% protein/20% fat breakdown.
I’m aiming to lose 1.5-2lbs per week with a 800-1000 calorie deficit per day. I also take GNC MegaMan Sport and also about 5g of glutamine.
Will this type of diet minimize muscle loss during “cutting phase” (Fat Loss)? Or is muscle loss inevitable? If it does, is there a better way to tone down while keeping muscle?
I’m thinking of switching to this diet/workout for a month and going back to regular diet with intense workouts. I will also increase glutamine intake to 10-13gs during the cutting phase.
A possible schedule:
1. When you wake up :1 1/2 cup bowl low sugar cereal
2.11:00 – bowl of carrots and an apple
3. 2:00 – bowl of brown rice
4. 5:00 – pasta meal w/ yogurt
5. 8:00 – 2 hard boiled eggs
Follow the general flow of the intake of fruits, vegatables, grains, and dairy. When you drink a large glass of water with each meal, it fills you up 2-3x faster. That helps hunger craving control.

How to Get Ripped – The Real Deal About Glutamine
Glutamine has been widely touted as one of the best supplements a muscle builder could have because of its muscle mass enhancing capabilities. The things is, many people are blindly succumb to that claim and shell out large amounts of money on a supplement which they don’t fully understand. A supplement being promoted by a billion-dollar industry, i.e., the supplement industry.
The things is, glutamine is not the “must-have” supplement that many people are claiming it to be. In other words, you can succeed at building muscles even without additional/extra glutamine supplementation.
What is Glutamine?
Medically and scientifically speaking, glutamine is only one of the 20 amino acids produced by our body. And since our body produces it by itself and since it can be derived from glutamic acid, Glutamine is considered a non-essential amino acid. And it’s not as rare or specialized as you may think.
Fact is, you can get anywhere from 5 to 8 grams of glutamine each day from an average diet. And you can get more if you are religiously taking in the muscle-building essential foods, such as beef, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy.
The Claims
Glutamine’s muscle mass enhancing capabilities is actually a proven medical fact. As a matter of fact, physicians have been known to use glutamine in treating muscle-wasting conditions like Huntington’s disease.
Other supposed capabilities of glutamine include:
- Improvement of protein synthesis which prevents your muscle from being eaten up by your body for energy.
- Maintenance of glycogen levels and cell volume and hydration which facilitates muscle recovery.
- Increased production of growth hormones which enables you to build muscles fast.
- Boosting the immune system which lessens our chances of catching diseases.
- Maintenance of the structural integrity of the digestive system.
- Treatment of ulcer.
Quite a long list huh?
Unfortunately, some researchers are suggesting that there’s no truth in most of Glutamine’s claimed benefits.
According to some expert, the damage you inflict on your muscles during workout is not significant to warrant the use of Glutamine. They noted that proving that glutamine works in clinical stress testing (severe burns, AIDS, and extensive surgery) does not mean it also has the same effect on a body that has been subjected to exercise stress.
Majority of the research involving endurance athletes have also revealed that glutamine has minimal contribution in regards to enhancement of the immune system. Some of them even found glutamine to have no effect whatsoever on exercise-induced suppression of the immune system.
And contrary to popular belief, it is still not clear whether or not glutamine improves a person’s glycogen levels after weight-training.
Another thing is that, studies have shown that 0.9 grams/kg of body weight of glutamine per day showed practically no effect on muscle performance, body composition, or muscle breakdown on healthy adults. To put things more clearly, if you weight 200 lbs., 0.9 grams/kg of body weight translates to almost 82 grams of glutamine, which further translates to over $1,000 annually. Now, would you knowingly spend that much money on something that does very little?
The moral of the story is this, always take time to understand more about things that you are unfamiliar with. Not only will it make things all worth your while, but it can end up saving you a whole lot of money.
Like I always say, it’s better to ask “how to get ripped?” than “have I just been ripped off?”.
