dollar and lbs math question!!?
supermarket selling two candies: orange slices and strawberry leaves. oranges cost $1.39 per lb and strawberry $1.89 per lb. supermarket combine 6 lbs of orange with certain amt of strawberry leaves. If the mixture is to sell for $1.71 per lb, how many lbs of orange slices are needed?
Pleas show each step, Thank you!!!
OK – this is an Algebra question:
O (oranges) is 1.39/lb
S (strawberry) is 1.89/lb
6lbs * 1.39/lb + xlb * 1.89/lb = (6+x) lb* 1.71/lb
8.34 + 1.89x = (6+x)* 1.71 ; do the multiplying of the first item
8.34 + 1.89x = 10.26 + 1.71x ; now do the multiplying on the other side
.18x = 1.92 ; combine the like terms on both sides
x = 10.66
So you combine 10.66 or 10 2/3 lbs of the strawberries with the 6 lbs of the Orange to get the mixture you want.
Proof:
6 (1.39) + 10.66(1.89) = 16.66(1.71)??
8.34 + 20.14 = 28.48 ??
28.48 = 28.48 YES!!
Hope that helps.

FRESH STRAWBERRY FROSTING
2 tbsp solid shortening
1 tbsp butter
1/4 tsp salt
4 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/3 cup crushed strawberries
1 tsp lemon juice
Blend the shortening, butter, and salt together in a medium mixing bowl. Beat in one cup of the confectioners’ sugar. Stir the lemon juice into the crushed strawberries. Add the strawberries and lemon mixture alternately with the remaining confectioners’ sugar to the original mixture, stirring to blend well.
Yield: Enough to frost your favorite two-layer cake.
ICE BOX COOKIES
Can you remember having an ice box instead of a refrigerator? Oh-Oh, I can!
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup shelled, chopped pistachios
In a medium mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add vanilla and egg, blending until smooth. Combine the flour and baking powder; add to the creamed mixture. Stir in pistachios. Shape the dough into two rolls a little over an inch each in diameter. Wrap in waxed paper* and chill thoroughly in the ice box.
When ready to bake, cut rolls into 1/4-inch thick slices and place on very lighted greased cookie sheets. Bake at 400 degrees for 6 to 7 minutes or until barely brown on edges. Makes about six dozen.
Tip: Dough can be refrigerated up to one week. Slice and bake as needed.
*In today’s modern kitchens, plastic wrap would work better than waxed paper.
