Cancer Prevention By Plants Of Rajasthan
Experimental and epidemiological evidence indicates “Chemoprevention” or “Radiation Protection” as a new phase of meaningful strategy to prevent cancer/radiation damage in human beings. It is now well established fact that induction of drug metabolizing and conjugative enzymes is a critical determinant of the carcinogenicity of chemicals and radiation damage. Therefore it is postulated the compounds that could modulate the activities of these enzymes could reduce the risk of tumor development of humans as well as protection from radiation damage. Several photochemical including those present in our diets have been found to decrease the incidence and mortality of certain cancers in high risk human population. We have studied the cancer chemopeventive effects of certain plants extracts of Acacia nilotica, Brassica conpestris, Liv-52, Menthapiperita, Panax ginseng ocimum sanctum, Spirulina fusiformis, root and froot of tribulus terrestris ( an ayurvedic medicinal plant), Neriul indicum of family Apocynaceae, an evergreen shrub, commonly known as kaner. Theobroma cacao,chlorophytum(safed musli) on skin carcinogenesis and lung tumor model system in swiss albino mice. These plant extracts showed inhibition of skin papilloma induced by 7,12,Dimethyl benz(a)anthracene(DMBA)and application of croton oil in terms of significant decrease in terms of reduction of tumor incidence,tumor burden,latent period and cumulative number of papillomas. Similarly there is significant decrease in the fore stomach model system induced by benzopyrene. Enzymatic analysis of the phase I and phase II enzymes showed significant decrease in cytochrome p-450, and significant increase in the glutathione s-transferase, glutathione reductase,reduced glutathione, super oxide dismutase and catalase activity attributed to the chemopreventive properties. However, there is a decrease in the lipid per oxidation.
Molecular mechanism of the anticancer potential; of plants extracts was assessed with the help of animal tissue culture, cytofluorimetric methods, use of PCR Western blotting, DNA adduct formation. The present study shows that the plants may be used against cancer for human beings.
