ferrets who bite, help?
i have a ferret that i got on sunday and at first she was ok with me holding her and didnt even try to bite but now she doesnt stop. she first came from a farm and then went to a lady and now i have her. she hasnt been handled to much which is really obvious. she has nipped me whilst playing around. i was kinda moving my feet a bit and she went to nip them which was fine because its all fun and games for her. but she bites a lot aswell in an angry way. i have tried bitter spray, i have tried the ‘ow, no’ command, my boyfriend heard that citronella oil mixed with water works if u spray it on hands, that didnt do anything. and when we wear gloves she attacks more. she seems like she likes the taste of the horrible stuff we use lol.
does anyone have any ideas as to how i can get her to stop? i want to play with her and stuff but at the moment i cant and its annoying
Nine months means she will still have tons of energy. I would stop thinking about why she’s biting – out of anger, how can you know? Are you just assuming because of the “viciousness” she’s using?
One thing to remember is that ferrets play with people and bite harder sometimes when there is no one else to play with. She could just be a very hyper ferret who doesn’t understand how hard she’s playing.
With that kind of biter, no taste will keep them from playing around so hard. What you need to do is scruff her. I know you’ve already done it. When she’s about to bite you, scruff her, and hold her up (you can support her butt). Say no (don’t scream or yell it), and hold her there for 30 seconds or more.
Scruffing is not in itself a punishment – it’s the restraint, the keeping her from playing, making her bored, and associating the hard biting with not being able to play. It’s more direct than putting her away in the cage. If 30 seconds does not work and she bites again hard, or goes to bite again viciously, scruff again. We had to train a 6 month old like this, and it took over a month, and for the first few times we scruffed, she’d ignore it until she was being scruffed for over a minute – then she started to get annoyed, and stopped playing with our hands.
Another thing to remember is that until her teeth dull, you can just avoid even having much contact with her when she’s that hyper and trying to bite hard – give her lots of stuffed animals and put them between you and her. Babies have sharp teeth sometimes up to a year and a half years old until kibble dulls them. If you are being hurt too much by her playing and nothing is working, let her play by herself until she calms down. At 9 months she is still a ball of energy.

Citronella Grass Cultivation – CSIR – NEIST Technology
Citronella Grass Cultivation
Recently I visited CSIR technofest 2010 showcased by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair in New Delhi, the Capital of India. In this technofest, I have seen a technology “Citronella Grass Cultivation” which was developed by NEIST (Noth East Institue of Science & Technology), Jorhat, India under the aegis of CSIR, New Delhi, India.
Cironella crop cannot withstand in frost, long and severe drought or water stagnation areas. It requires warm and humid climate with temperature between 15-34oC. Cultivation has been done in tropics like 1000 meters altitude. It grows in even land, terraces, steep sloping areas.
Crop will go 5 years and only after that, second crop is recommended. Land should be prepared in February – March time and planting can be done in May – June time. Planting will be done with a space 60 X 60 cms gap.
7 tonnes of compost manure is required per hectare land for this citronella grass cultivation. First crop will be ready after 90 days, 4 cuttings can be possible per year from second year of cultivation.
From this grass, oil can be extracted either by water and steam distillation or steam distillation process. 1% oil can be extracted from this grass and 15 to 20 tonnes crop can be expected per hectare l and.
Rs.20000 to Rs.25000 profits can be expected from one hectare land. This oil is raw material for aromatic chemicals. This can be used in manufacture of soaps, repellants and cosmetics. This oil found is against certain micro organisms. Deoiled grass can be used in mulching, as fuel in distillation unit, oil and manufacture paper boards.
NEISS is offering this technology in the form of technology transfer, demonstration, training, etc.
