This Is Not Your Grandmothers Fish Oil
I’m sure many of you can reflect back on times gone by when your grandmother was insistent on making sure you got your daily dose of cod liver oil. After all wasn’t it supposed to cure everything under the sun as well as make you smarter and run faster. Or at least she believed it made you run faster because the taste and smell associated with many of those products back in the day were for lack of better words simply awful.
But as we fast forward to today a lot has changed. Chances are grandma is not around with her favorite medicine spoon and that awful smelling fish oil with the horrendous aftertaste has since gone the way of the DO-Do bird.
Probably the most important advancement in fish supplements has to do with purification. Not all that many years ago these types of products were poorly purified and contained a vast array of potentially dangerous metals and chemical compounds such as mercury. Today virtually all fish oil supplements go through some type of purification process with molecular purification likely being the most comprehensive.
That said, not all fish oil supplements are created equal and many of the cheaper varieties are not quite as pure. With our oceans continually becoming more polluted with plastics, metals, PCBs, dioxins, pesticides, and other chemicals making sure the fish oil you buy has undergone molecular purification has never been more important.
Another really great advancement in fish oil supplements has been that of eliminating that fishy after taste through advances in encapsulation and molecular engineering. For those who just couldn’t take the stuff due to the aftertaste this has been a real blessing allowing them to take advantage of the many benefits of the omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA which fish oil supplements are rich in.
Now as you probably know back in your grandmothers day the only type of fish oil readily available was cod liver oil that had to be taken in liquid form. Today cod liver oil is still around for those who like to make friends with stray cats or gross out close friends with their bad breath. That said, for the most part cod liver oil been replaced with fish oil supplements utilizing the advantages of other types of fish; primarily sardines, anchovies, and mackerel. Some of the better premium brands may contain superior quality fish which typically are higher is omega 3 fatty acids such as tuna and hoki.
I would also like to bring it to your attention that currently there seems to be a disturbing trend afoot probably in an attempt to hold prices down. This trend is the addition of multiple fillers, including soy, making you think you are getting more for less. So be sure to check labels before spending your hard earned cash on these lower quality fish oil supplements.
In conclusion, today’s fish oil supplements don’t resemble grandma brand very much except that they contain cold water fatty fish providing more and more people with an opportunity to take of advantage of the proven cardiovascular and general health benefits these products have to offer.
