The Truth About CoQ10 Benefits

Since time immemorial, man has sought one pervasive cure-all that would be capable of taming the ravages of sickness and old age.  Throughout the centuries, there have always been those who sought to take advantage of this dream for their own greedy purposes, selling snake oils and false hopes to those in need of genuine medicine.

While there may never be a true panacea for all of the ills of man, new and ongoing research suggests that we may have the nearest realistic thing in CoQ10: a substance found within our bodies, naturally, which plays a role almost as elemental as the basic building blocks of life, itself.

CoQ10 is a chemical produced within the cells of the body that works with cellular mitochondria to produce ATP, the fuel of the body.  Because every single tissue in the body is dependent on ATP to be able to function, CoQ10 has a vital role in virtually every life function.  This broad-reaching influence is what accounts for the many benefits of taking CoQ10 supplements.  Because CoQ10 impacts every part of the body and nearly every aspect of human physiology, CoQ10 benefits simply cannot be ignored.

What is CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10 or ubiquinol, is an fat-soluble vitamin-type chemical compound found in the cellular mitochondria of virtually all eukaryotic organisms, including humans.  CoQ10 is a critical part of the electron transport chain, working through the aerobic respiration of the body’s cells to generate Adenosine Triphosphate, or ATP, which is the basic fuel for all of the body’s tissues and organs.  CoQ10 is responsible for the vast bulk (upwards of 95%) of the body’s energy.

Obviously, this is a crucially important natural substance.  However, the body’s production of CoQ10 peaks in its 20s and gradually declines until, during middle-age, the amount of CoQ10 generated within the body is not sufficient to replace what is lost on a daily basis.  A small amount of CoQ10 can be derived from the food we eat, but only a small fraction (about 1/100th) of the amount needed to maintain healthy levels is available from food sources.  Therefore, replenishing CoQ10 supplies in the body by means of dietary supplements is the only sure way to maintain optimal CoQ10 levels so that you can experience the many CoQ10 benefits for health and longevity throughout your life.

CoQ10 Benefits

The number of CoQ10 benefits available to the body, when healthy levels are maintained, are truly staggering.  More and more potential CoQ10 benefits are being uncovered all the time.  So far, there is conclusive evidence to suggest that CoQ10:

  • Is useful in treatment of and recovery from congestive heart failure
  • Increases the effectiveness of high blood pressure medications
  • Improves heart and blood vessel health, reducing the risk for heart disease
  • Helps regulate cholesterol by promoting “good” cholesterol
  • Guards against negative heart effects of statin cholesterol medications
  • Improves blood flow in diabetics taking statins for cholesterol  management
  • Helps in heart attack recovery and reduces chances of additional heart attacks
  • May reduce pain associated with angina
  • Reduces the frequency and severity of migraine headaches
  • Slows memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s disease
  • May slow the development of Parkinson’s disease and dementia
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Can improve overall health in individuals with HIV/AIDS
  • Can reduce symptoms of chronic fatigue
  • Has been shown to improve survival rates in cancer victims
  • Improves male fertility – boosts sperm count and sperm motility
  • Is useful in treating fibromyalgia
  • Improves muscle function in patients with muscular dystrophy
  • May help protect against gingivitis
  • Prevents oxidative damage to eye tissue and macular degeneration
  • Protects hearing and may prevent tinnitus (chronic ringing in the ears)
  • Enhances athletic performance safely
  • Works as an antioxidant to remove harmful free-radicals from the body
  • Can slow visible signs of aging

That is quite a list of beneficial applications!  So, while CoQ10 may not be the ultimate cure-all and Fountain of Youth rolled into one, it seems to be about the closest thing.  Even more exciting, this may well be only the tip of the iceberg.  Research into CoQ10 benefits is only in the beginning stages.  We can expect to see many more benefits emerge as researches delve deeper into the many uses for this amazing, natural coenzyme.  As of yet, no one knows the true extent of CoQ10 benefits.
