Fish Oil vs Flax Oil
People are debating between fish oil vs flax oil trying to find out which of the two are excellent sources of omega-3. But before we go into which ones are best let us discuss about omega-3 and why it is so in demand. Omega-3 is vital for our health and these essential fatty acids are prized primarily for its anti-inflammatory and mood stabilizing properties. In addition, it also has been found to lessen the risk of cardiovascular diseases and reduce the level of bad cholesterol in your system.
Omega-3 can be found in oily cold water fish such as herring, tile fish, salmon, sardines, hoki and tuna. There are also other fish sources that are being used as sources of fish oil but the ones mentioned above are among the most popular ones. Other sources aside from aquatic sources are walnuts, omega-3 induced foodstuffs, lamb meats and flaxseeds.
Although fish is said to be the richest source of omega-3 EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) people still look for other sources because of the fact that fish also contains heavy metals and toxic pollutants such as mercury, dioxin, PCB’s and 28 other elements. These elements are present in their marine and aquatic environments and fish freely absorb it in their tissues. The more polluted the area where the fish is being harvested the higher the levels of toxic pollutants in them. That is why companies are continually searching for clearer water where they could get their sources of fish. So far the cleanest is off the coast of Norway.
Omega-3 ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) on the other hand is found in other sources other than fish as mentioned above. When ingested our body has to convert ALA into EPA and then DHA.
Now looking back at fish oil vs flax oil benefits, it is pretty apparent that both provide the much needed omega-3. Flax oil however still needs to be converted into EPA and eventually DHA in order to become usable by our body. Studies show that in order for the body to convert ALA into EPA and DHA it requires certain amounts of magnesium, zinc and B vitamins. Other studies have shown that only 15% of ALA is converted into EPA and DHA. If a person is deficient of the aforementioned essentials the rest of the ALA is converted into AA (Arachidonic acid) which causes inflammation in the body.
Fish oil contains EPA and DHA which is directly absorbed by the body ready for use. No unused elements and conversions needed. The worry about heavy metals and toxic pollutants have been resolved by requiring manufacturers to allow fish oil to undergo purification and molecular distillation processes to reduce if not eliminate them. There are also independent third-party testing laboratories around the world that can ensure that the fish oil passes standards such as International Fish Oil Standards. High quality fish oil supplements must have Certificate of Analysis where it shows the amount of omega-3′s and pollutants in each soft gel capsule or bottle.
It is up to you know on which ones are more viable for you. As long as there are certified studies to support the claims of each product then it would be much appreciated by many. As far as this writer is concerned there are pros and cons when comparing fish oil vs flax oil supplements.
