What is Spirulina?

I’m sure you’ve heard about it – it is after all overtaking the health market – but what exactly is it? To begin, spirulina is algae. To be specific, it is a blue-green micro algae not to be confused with its close nutritional supplement cousin Chlorella, a green algae. Both are extremely beneficial for your health, but also inherently different. Here we are going to focus on spirulina.

Spirulina is the common name for Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima, two forms of cyanobacteria that are now sold all over the world. Arthrospirais has deep seeded roots centuries back in history. Spirulina is believed to have been first used by the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican cultures as a whole food supplement. Some historians even date its usage back to Africa localized near Lake Chad.

Spirulina grows naturally in various lakes around the world. Spirulina needs highly alkaline water to grow, therefore it is typically found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Today, most spirulina is grown in “Spirulina Farms” using advanced aquaculture and algaculture methods. It is grown in raceway ponds and agitated using paddles. Thanks to these methods, we can now gorw large quantities of extremely nutritional and “clean” spirulina.

Spirulina is a nutritional powerhouse. It is typically 50-70% protein, depending on where it originates from. Compare this to beef with a protein concentration of 22%. Additionally, spirulina contains all of the essential amino acids vital for one’s diet. Pair this with the fact that the protein is coming from a living green organism rich in beneficial chlorophyll you have an all around amazing product. Chlorophyll is beneficial on many levels, the most notable being that is is extremely absorbable due to the fact that its chemical content and alignment is very similar to that of our own blood. Spirulina is rich in various fatty acids and contains an array of vitamins including vitamin A, B, C, D and E. The blue-green algae is high in potassium and contains chromium, calcium, zinc, copper, iron, magnesium, sodium, manganese, phosphorus, and selenium – all essential minerals. Carotenoids, natural pigments found in plants and some marine animals, are present in spirulina. Carotenoids act as free-radical scavengers thus making them beneficial for anti-aging techniques.

Various double-blind human studies have been performed with Spirulina. Such studies have found Spirulina to:

-Increase Energy

-Increase Anti-Oxidants in the Blood

-Maintain Healthy Cholesterol Levels

-Reduce Blood Pressure

Studies have also found spirulina to support:

-Healthy PH Levels in the Body

-Natural Cleansing and Detoxification

-Healthy Immune System Function

-Healthy Digestion

Spirulina is consumed in one of three forms: flakes, powders, or tablets/capsules. Taking into account the vast array of health benefits and nutritional benefits, why wouldn’t you consider adding spirulina to your daily diet?
