I need to gain weight but will intaking protein shakes help me do that?
How does it work? I work out every 2 days btw. What would I need to do to gain weight by taking protein shakes. I know that means no junk because I heard its bad for the heart. How do these things work? Can someone explain to me. I have had no experience with protein shakes.
Protein shakes are a terrible option for anyone because so many have been found to contian contaminants including toxins, detergents, fillers, etc. Even the best brands such as Slim Fast and Ensure are only meal replacements for LOSING weight, not gaining. Always eat food, even if it’s burgers and shakes (preferably not fries). Supplements are not controlled, don’t have to be tested, and the labels often to not reflect the actual contents. Many are just scams.
There are only two ways to increase your weight if we don’t include water retention. They are adding fat and adding muscle.
The most a top bodybuilder sans steroids can add per month is about a pound and that assuming he’s way below his genetic potential. So, if you workout your entire body with heavy weights as much as possible (about 10 hours per week max), you may add one pound per month. If you want to add fat, you can add a lot of weight. The question you need to answer is; do you really want more body fat? And, the answer to that may very well be; no. For example, if you want to gain weight for a sport, you may find that you don’t want your power to weight ratio to decrease…as in sports like wrestling or track, etc.
If you do want more body fat, just eat a high calories diet rich in complex carbs. You probably will want to keep your macro nutrient ratio around 60/20/20 (%calories from carbs/fats/protein). If you’re an endomorph or mesomorph, you should be able to add fat at the rate of 1-3 pounds per month or more. However, if you’re an ectomorph, you may find you can add no fat at all or you will be severely limited in how much you can add. You have nothing to say in the matter of your genetically determined metabolic rate or your inherited body type. Above all, always eat food and never take supplements without a recommendation from your doctor.
So, those are your options. Unfortunately we don’t have as much control over what we can do with our bodies as many people seem to think.
